Shadowing: speak along with real English

A pronunciation exercise: listen to a short phrase, pause, and say it the same way. It is one of the fastest ways to sound more natural.

What is shadowing?

You copy a native speaker, phrase by phrase, like a shadow. You don’t translate or study grammar. You train your mouth and ear to follow real English: rhythm, stress, linking words together and intonation.

How to do it

  1. 1

    Listen

Play a short line from a scene. Notice where the voice goes up and down.

  2. 2

    Pause and repeat

Stop the video and say the line out loud, copying the speed, stress and feeling.

  3. 3

    Listen again

Play the same line again and compare it with how you said it.

  4. 4

    Speak with the scene

When the line feels easy, say it together with the actor.

Start small

5–10 minutes a day is enough. Repeat one scene until it feels easy, then move on.

A2–B1

Pause after every line. It’s fine to repeat only the first few words at first.

B2 and higher

Try to speak at the same time as the actor, without pausing.
