What is a CEFR level test?

A CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference) level test estimates your English proficiency. This online version focuses on A1-C1 and checks grammar, vocabulary, reading, listening and a short piece of writing (plus optional speaking) to find a practical starting level.

How long does the English level test take?

Accepted Answer

It takes 15–20 minutes: 16 to 22 adaptive questions on grammar, vocabulary and reading (a few more if a level needs one more check), 6 to 8 short listening clips, and one short paragraph to write. The optional speaking check adds 3 minutes. There is no strict time limit, so you can take your time with each question.

What does the English level test measure?

Grammar (sentence structure, tenses), vocabulary (word meaning, usage, collocations), reading (understanding short texts), listening (short everyday conversations and announcements) and writing (one short opinion paragraph rated by our AI tutor). An optional 3-minute speaking check with the AI tutor can be added at the end. You get a level for each skill and an overall level.

How accurate is this placement test?

Accepted Answer

It is a quick estimate, not an official exam. Questions get harder after correct answers and easier after mistakes, and the result uses all your answers. In our simulations it usually gives the right level or the level next to it, and it shows when you are close to the next level. It checks grammar, vocabulary, reading, listening and a short piece of writing, plus an optional 3-minute speaking chat with our AI tutor at the end. The writing and listening parts are short, so their levels are a guide, and the test does not check C2.

What are the CEFR English levels?

The CEFR has six levels: A1 (Beginner) - basic phrases and simple sentences; A2 (Elementary) - routine tasks and simple conversations; B1 (Intermediate) - familiar topics and travel situations; B2 (Upper Intermediate) - complex texts and fluent interaction; C1 (Advanced) - demanding texts and flexible language use; C2 (Mastery) - near-native fluency and nuanced expression.

Can I retake the English level test?

Accepted Answer

Yes. A retake skips the questions you have already answered (on the same device, or in your account when you are signed in) while there are new ones at your level. English grows slowly, so the best time to check again is about 3 months later (at least 8 weeks, or after about 60 hours of study). A test after a few weeks usually shows the same level.
