The Situation
You're in the kitchen at work, in the elevator, or waiting for a meeting to start. Someone says, "Hey, how's it going?" This is small talk: a short, light conversation that builds relationships. In English-speaking workplaces it's very important — people who make small talk are seen as friendly and part of the team.

Keeping it going: follow-up questions
The secret of small talk is the follow-up question. Don't just answer — ask something back.

|---|---|
| I went hiking on Saturday. | Oh nice! Where did you go? |

- Lucky you!
- Oh no, that's too bad.
- Same here! / Me too!

Dialogue 1: Monday Morning
Chris: Morning, Olena! How was your weekend? Olena: Really nice, thanks! We went to Niagara Falls. Chris: Oh, wow! Was it your first time? Olena: Yes, it was. It was amazing, but so many tourists! How about you? Did you do anything fun? Chris: Not much. I watched my daughter's soccer game and relaxed. Olena: That sounds nice. Did her team win? Chris: They did, 3–1! She was very proud. Olena: Ha, congratulations to her! Anyway, I'd better check my emails. Have a good day! Chris: You too!
Dialogue 2: In the Kitchen
Priya: Hi! I don't think we've met. I'm Priya, from Marketing. Andriy: Hi Priya, I'm Andriy. I just started in IT last week. Priya: Oh, welcome! How are you finding it so far? Andriy: Good, thanks. Everyone is very friendly. Still learning where everything is! Priya: Ha, it takes a while. Have you tried the café across the street? Their sandwiches are great. Andriy: Not yet, but I will. Thanks for the tip! Priya: No problem. Nice meeting you!
Tips
- "How are you?" is a greeting, not a real question. Answer briefly: Good, thanks! You? — not a long story about your health.
- Ask more than you talk. People like talking about themselves.
- Keep it positive. Small talk is not the place for serious complaints.
- Remember details for next time: How was the trip to Mexico?
Common Mistakes
- Answering with one word: "How was your weekend?" — "Good." (conversation over!) → "Good, thanks! I went to a friend's birthday. How about yours?"
- "What did you do on the weekend?" — "I was at home, I was resting." → I just relaxed at home.
- "How are you?" — "Not so good, I have a headache and my landlord..." → keep it light.
- Asking "How much do you earn?" → avoid!
Your Turn: Practise Speaking
- Answer "How was your weekend?" with two sentences and a question back.
- Write three follow-up questions for: "I just got back from vacation."
- Practise Dialogue 2 as the new employee, using your own name and job.
