How the CELPIP score works
Listening and Reading
A computer scores them. Each test has 38 scored questions, every answer is right or wrong, and a blank counts as wrong. Your number of correct answers becomes a CELPIP level. Some questions are unscored test items, but you can't tell which ones.
Writing and Speaking
Trained raters score them in four areas: Content/Coherence, Vocabulary, Readability (Writing) or Listenability (Speaking), and Task Fulfillment. The ratings become a CELPIP level, so there is no raw score.
CELPIP level and CLB
Levels 3–12 are the same number in CLB. Level 2 = CLB 1–2, and 0–1 means not enough to assess. Each skill counts on its own, so your lowest skill often decides if you reach a target.

This is the approximate chart the calculator uses: correct answers out of 38 for each CELPIP level. The ranges overlap, so a score near the edge can mean either level.

Source: “Approximate Scores and CELPIP Levels” on celpip.ca, checked October 2026. Your score report shows only your CELPIP level for each skill, not the number of correct answers.
It gives an estimate, not an official CELPIP score. It uses CELPIP's approximate chart for Listening and Reading, where the ranges overlap and the number of correct answers for a level can change slightly from one version of the test to another. That is why you sometimes see two levels, like level 7–8. In practice tests, aim for the top of the range.
How many correct answers do I need for CLB 7 in CELPIP?
According to CELPIP's approximate chart, about 27–31 correct answers out of 38 in Listening and about 24–28 out of 38 in Reading. Writing and Speaking need a level 7 from the raters.
How do I convert a CELPIP score to CLB?
From level 3 to level 12, the CELPIP level is the same number as the CLB level, so CELPIP 7 = CLB 7. CELPIP level 2 = CLB 1–2, and levels 0–1 mean there was not enough to assess. Each skill gets its own level.
Why can't I enter a raw score for Writing and Speaking?
Because there are no correct answers to count. Trained raters score Writing and Speaking in four areas (Content/Coherence, Vocabulary, Readability or Listenability, and Task Fulfillment) and give you a CELPIP level directly. In the calculator, choose the level you expect, for example from a teacher's feedback on your practice answers.
