What Is the Past Simple?

The past simple tense describes actions that started and finished in the past. The action is complete — it is over.

  • I visited Paris last summer. (The visit is finished.)
  • She called me yesterday. (The call is over.)

How to Form the Past Simple

Regular Verbs

Add -ed to the base form of the verb:

  • work → worked
  • play → played
  • want → wanted
  • live → lived (just add -d if the verb ends in -e)
  • study → studied (consonant + y → change y to -ied)
  • stop → stopped (short vowel + consonant → double the consonant)

Irregular Verbs

Many common verbs have irregular past forms. You must memorize these:

Base FormPast SimpleBase FormPast Simple
gowentcomecame
havehadmakemade
seesawtaketook
getgotknowknew
saysaidgivegave
eatatedrinkdrank
buyboughtthinkthought
writewrotereadread
dodidbewas/were

Good news: The past simple form is the same for ALL subjects (I, you, he, she, it, we, they).

Negative Sentences

Use did not (didn't) + base form of the verb:

  • I didn't go to school yesterday.
  • She didn't call me.
  • They didn't know the answer.

Important: After "didn't," always use the base form — NOT the past form.

  • Correct: I didn't see him.
  • Wrong: I didn't saw him.

Questions

Use Did + subject + base form:

  • Did you go to the party? — Yes, I did. / No, I didn't.
  • Did she finish her homework?
  • Did they enjoy the movie?

Questions with "Was/Were"

For the verb "to be," don't use "did":

  • Was he at home? — Yes, he was.
  • Were you tired? — No, I wasn't.

Time Expressions for Past Simple

These words often signal the past simple:

  • yesterday — I saw her yesterday.
  • last week/month/year — We traveled last summer.
  • ago — He moved here two years ago.
  • in 2020 — She graduated in 2020.
  • when I was young — When I was young, I played outside every day.

Common Mistakes

Mistake 1: Using the past form after "didn't"

  • Wrong: I didn't went to the store.
  • Correct: I didn't go to the store.

Mistake 2: Using "did" with "was/were"

  • Wrong: Did you was at home?
  • Correct: Were you at home?

Mistake 3: Forgetting to change the verb

  • Wrong: I go to school yesterday.
  • Correct: I went to school yesterday.

Mistake 4: Wrong spelling of regular past forms

  • Wrong: stoped, studyed, planed
  • Correct: stopped, studied, planned

Practice Tips

  1. Write about your day yesterday: Use at least 10 past simple verbs to describe everything you did.
  2. Learn 5 irregular verbs per week: Start with the most common ones. Make sentences with each one.
  3. Tell a story: Think of a childhood memory and tell it using the past simple. "When I was 10, I went to..."
  4. Practice the negative: For each positive sentence you write, make the negative version. "I went → I didn't go."
  5. Ask questions about the past: Practice with a partner: "Did you watch TV last night? What did you eat for dinner?"
