What Is the Past Simple?
The past simple tense describes actions that started and finished in the past. The action is complete — it is over.
- I visited Paris last summer. (The visit is finished.)
- She called me yesterday. (The call is over.)
How to Form the Past Simple
Regular Verbs
Add -ed to the base form of the verb:
- work → worked
- play → played
- want → wanted
- live → lived (just add -d if the verb ends in -e)
- study → studied (consonant + y → change y to -ied)
- stop → stopped (short vowel + consonant → double the consonant)
Irregular Verbs
Many common verbs have irregular past forms. You must memorize these:
| Base Form | Past Simple | Base Form | Past Simple |
|---|---|---|---|
| go | went | come | came |
| have | had | make | made |
| see | saw | take | took |
| get | got | know | knew |
| say | said | give | gave |
| eat | ate | drink | drank |
| buy | bought | think | thought |
| write | wrote | read | read |
| do | did | be | was/were |
Good news: The past simple form is the same for ALL subjects (I, you, he, she, it, we, they).
Negative Sentences
Use did not (didn't) + base form of the verb:
- I didn't go to school yesterday.
- She didn't call me.
- They didn't know the answer.
Important: After "didn't," always use the base form — NOT the past form.
- Correct: I didn't see him.
- Wrong:
I didn't saw him.
Questions
Use Did + subject + base form:
- Did you go to the party? — Yes, I did. / No, I didn't.
- Did she finish her homework?
- Did they enjoy the movie?
Questions with "Was/Were"
For the verb "to be," don't use "did":
- Was he at home? — Yes, he was.
- Were you tired? — No, I wasn't.
