Complete guide to the past simple tense for regular and irregular verbs.

Overview

The past simple describes completed actions and events in the past. The action started and finished at a specific or implied past time.

Formation

Affirmative — Regular Verbs

Add -ed to the base form (same for all subjects):

Negative

Subject + did not (didn't) + base form (for ALL verbs except "be")

  • I didn't go to the party.
  • She didn't see him yesterday.
  • They didn't know the answer.

For "be": Subject + was/were + not

  • I wasn't at home.
  • They weren't happy.

Interrogative

Did + subject + base form? (for ALL verbs except "be")

  • Did you go to the party?
  • Did she call you?
  • What did they say?

For "be": Was/Were + subject?

  • Were you at home?
  • Was she happy?

Short Answers

  • Yes, I did. / No, I didn't.
  • Yes, she was. / No, she wasn't.

Pronunciation of -ed

Regular past forms have three pronunciations:

Usage

1. Completed Actions at a Specific Time

  • I visited Rome last summer.
  • She graduated in 2018.
  • They moved here three years ago.

2. Completed Actions (Time Implied)

  • "Who built this house?" (at some point in the past)
  • Shakespeare wrote many plays.

3. Series of Past Actions

  • I woke up, had breakfast, and left the house.
  • She opened the door, walked in, and sat down.

4. Past Habits and States

  • When I was young, I played football every day.
  • She lived in France for ten years. (She doesn't anymore.)

5. Past Facts

  • Dinosaurs lived millions of years ago.
  • The Roman Empire lasted for centuries.

Common Time Expressions

Yesterday, last night/week/month/year, ago (two days ago, a week ago), in 2010, when I was young, at that time, the other day, once upon a time

Past Simple vs. Present Perfect

Rule: If you mention WHEN (yesterday, last week, in 2005), use past simple.

Common Mistakes

  1. Using past form after "didn't":

    • Wrong: I didn't went.
    • Correct: I didn't go.
  2. Using "did" with "was/were":

    • Wrong: Did you was happy?
    • Correct: Were you happy?
  3. Forgetting irregular forms:

    • Wrong: I goed, she thinked, he buyed
    • Correct: I went, she thought, he bought
  4. Wrong spelling of regular forms:

    • Wrong: stoped, planed, studyed
    • Correct: stopped, planned, studied
