IELTS Writing Task 2 Mistakes: What Keeps Students Stuck at Lower Band Scores
A lot of IELTS students know grammar rules and essay structure in theory, but their Writing Task 2 score still does not improve.
Usually, the reason is not one big mistake. It is a pattern of smaller weaknesses.
Mistake 1: Not answering the question fully
Many essays talk around the topic instead of answering the exact question.
Always ask:
- What is the task asking me to do?
- opinion?
- discussion?
- advantages/disadvantages?
- problem/solution?
Mistake 2: Weak structure
Your essay should feel easy to follow.
A strong basic structure is:
- introduction
- body 1
- body 2
- conclusion
Mistake 3: Ideas are too general
Broad statements without explanation or examples make essays weaker.
Each main point needs:
- explanation
- development
- example if useful
Mistake 4: Trying to sound too advanced
Very complex grammar often creates more mistakes.
It is better to write clearly and accurately than to force unnatural vocabulary.
Mistake 5: Poor paragraph control
Each paragraph should have one clear purpose. Do not mix too many ideas together.
Final advice
IELTS Writing Task 2 improves when you practise:
- reading the question carefully
